Never has a picture been worth a thousand words in illustrating the incompetence of government than this – an image shows Hurricane Sandy volunteers feeding FEMA workers.
The picture shows members of ‘Occupy Sandy’ – an offshoot of the Occupy Wall Street movement – doing FEMA’s job for them. It’s an illustration of how big government has once again failed to accomplish the very task its supporters ascribe to it – taking care of people. The photo was confirmed by Occupy Boston and AnonMedics.
Indeed, FEMA has not only failed to sufficiently help east coast residents hit by the devastating hurricane – some of them were forced to go dumpster diving for food – the federal agency has in fact blocked relief efforts just as it did during Hurricane Katrina back in 2005.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has ordered Shelter Island residents to “stop” donating goods bound for Island Park and Long Beach. It’s not that the goods, including clothing and other items, are not needed, indeed they were “gone in 48 hours” according to one volunteer – it’s the fact that FEMA refuses to relinquish power on deciding how they are distributed.
FEMA instead insists that people donate cash to organizations like the Red Cross, which has been caught over and over again stealing donations and is riddled with corruption.
During a recent press conference, Staten Island Borough President James Molinaro slammed the Red Cross, highlighting how their executives are paid hundreds of thousands of dollars a year yet never set foot on the front lines of a disaster.
“My advice to the people of Staten Island is: Do not donate to the American Red Cross. Let them get their money elsewhere,” said Molinaro.
Despite an onslaught of financial support for the victims of the 2011 earthquake in Haiti, millions of dollars donated to the Red Cross went missing and have still not been tracked down.
Hurricane Sandy victims have savaged both FEMA and the Red Cross for abandoning residents, some of whom still remain without power weeks after the storm. FEMA even ludicrously closed relief centers in New York due to “bad weather”.
Former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani also slammed FEMA’s response as being worse than their reaction to Hurricane Katrina.
Volunteer groups have again proven more adept at dealing with the crisis and offering real help to victims, prompting questions as to why FEMA is ordering them to stop their efforts and instead rely on a bloated bureaucracy that has displayed its ineptitude time and time again.
The most infamous example of FEMA’s botched response to a natural disaster was when the agency seemingly set about sabotaging relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Jefferson Parish President Aaron Broussard accused the agency of cutting emergency communication lines without notice during the early days of the disaster.
